Many vehicles from a small city car to a high performance sports car can benefit from Brake Disc Skimming.
What is Brake Disc Skimming?
To put it simply brake disc skimming is removing a layer of metal from either side of your vehicles brake discs in order to create a flat, even and balanced surface preventing brake pedal pulsation, juddering, squeaks and squeals whilst allowing new brake pads, should they be fitted in the process, to bed in quickly and correctly.
We utilise a specialist state of the art brake disc skimming lathe which attaches to the hub of your vehicle, in the same way the wheel would normally, whilst the brake discs are still in place. The machine will, once attached, calibrate using a built in gyro enabling it to balance exactly with your vehicles hub therefore if there is the slightest run-out in the hub (i.e. it doesn’t rotate in a perfectly true way), the process will take care of this and correct it by automatically cutting the brake disc to match the hub preventing any of the adverse brake effects above.
The machine works by utilising two cutting tips on a moveable bed which, while the motor is simultaneously rotating the hub/brake disc, move inwards manually to perform what is known as the rough cut, making the brake disc entirely level again. this is followed by an automatic final cut which completes the resurfacing by creating a smoother finish returning your brake discs to factory condition.
Why Should I Have My Brake Discs Skimmed?
One of the main reasons for having your discs skimmed would be cost. The cost of heavy duty brake discs fitted to large vehicles and to sports cars can be extortionate, however brake discs are not necessarily throw-away and, unless they have reached minimum thickness can be skimmed and re-used, saving money & reducing waste.
However, don't just believe disc skimming is only the preserve of expensive vehicles, it is often more efficient to skim brake discs on most vehicles instead of replacing them!
A big plus with having your discs skimmed would be the fact that, once resurfaced using our specialist lathe, your disc will be perfectly cut to suit your vehicles hub eradicating any judder you may have under braking creating a smoother vehicle with a more efficient braking system.
